May 15, 2013–Bottle tree

Day 75/365.  I’ve been photo-walking at the UK Arboretum several times weekly for the past couple of weeks, weather permitting.  I just noticed this bottle tree.  I learned that bottle trees are common here in the south, and that it is believed that they originated in Africa.  People would place bottle trees near their homes to trap evil spirits because the beauty of the sun shining through the bottles was thought to be irresistible to them.  Blue bottles were supposed to be the most powerful traps.  I could hear the sounds of the breeze as it whistled through the bottles–maybe a siren song for spirits?
